Shel: Back on the road again. Left the campground and went to a glacier that we could walk out onto. This is on the way from Homer to Valdez. The Glenn Highway is kind of hilly and winding so progress was a little slow. After walking on the glacier, we continued on toward Valdez and stopped at the Wrangle - St. Elias National Park visitor's center. There we decided we would go into the park tomorrow so we rode down to Chitina which is at the entrance of the park, and camped there. BTW - we're on the road 1 month today :) Geni: Got to walk on a glacier today which was great! It took some time getting to the Matanuska glacier - bumpy roads, small hike, and finally on the glacier. It wasn't a high one, like you see from the ocean, but it was definitely an up close view - the ice, the snow, the rocks, the crevices in between, the cold water! (Received a surprise whats up phone call with the Skippers! Great talking to catch up with grandkids!) Later, a ranger at the visitors center suggested we go to a town which seemed interesting. After a very long, bumpy, windy road, we ended up in Chitina and pulled over in a turnout to spend the night. It is a town of less than 130 people. We can hear the wind blowing through the edges of the windows and shakes the camper. But, it's quiet and we'll sleep well. . .hopefully. Tomorrow another long ride (2 1/2 hours on a dirt road and back) to what we were told to be an interesting town, McCarthy. |

Deep crevices in the glaciers. Many have water running through them. Some very deep and dangerous (and deadly) if you fall into them |
