Sheldon and Geni's 2014 Camping Trip
Today is: September 24
We woke up in: Moab, UT We're going to sleep in: Vernal, UT

Shel: Busy day - went and did some shopping in Moab, then headed to Dinosaur National Monument. We had to go through an 8200' pass with lots of hairpin turns - going so slow didn't cool the transmission well and temps reached 212 - so we took a lunch break and let everything cool. Continued without incident :) Then we toured in Dinosaur National Monument. Rushed back to get into the campground. From now on we are heading home :)

Geni: Crazy day. . . winding down and heading home, so Dinosaur Park was just a whirlwind where we zipped right through it. Trip has been going well so when the transmission reached high temp after climbing up to a mountain pass, I wasn't too happy looking at the hairpin turn on the edge of the mountain and wondering how we could be rescued if need be. But Shel got us through (and over the pass) without any problem.

Dinosaur Quarry is actually a place where the remains of dinosaurs have settled and they built a building around it (similar to Mammoth "place" in South Dakota). The dinosaurs experienced a big drought and then a big flood which dragged the bones to a spot (logjam) where they settled and were covered with sand. Nearby was a home where a woman lived for 50 years without electricity until her death in 1964 at the age of 90. She married five times, but decided solitude was what she was looking for and provided herself with all she needed. I think the five marriages is why she was looking for solitude!

This is the inside of the building - walls are the rock with bones embedded in it
This dinosaur is a cast of the real thing

Many of the bones are still within the rock, not visible

Lots of the bones are also at Carnegie Museum in Pittsburg

Authentic dinosaur head

Because they were swept away by the river, the bones were not intact like in South Dakota

It's hard to believe that these are real dinosaur remains

He may be real, except his real head was too heavy to put on the bones (his head is in the display - a previous picture)

The ranger suggested this and we decided to be silly

The femur of a dinosaur

Some pretty rock formations around the park

All the different minerals show as so many different colors

We were just riding through the sites, not stopping

This is called the turtle rock

Found some petroglyphs high up on the side of some cliffs from the ancient indians

Josie's cabin - set far away from anyone. She lived there until she was 89.

House had four rooms and seemed fairly big for one person - dirt floors and it said she kept it cozy and had rugs over the floors

Must have been the chicken coop

Another view of the cabin - it really was peaceful there

Well for running water
