Sheldon and Geni's 2014 Camping Trip
Today is: September 17
We woke up in: Gridley, Ca We're going to sleep in: Reno, NV

Shel: Made it a short day of travels as we just got through the mountains and then camped in Reno for the night. We went through Donner Pass at 7227'! Dropped the trailer at a camp ground and drove up to Virginia City where we took a nice little train ride and Geni toured all the shops. Tomorrow we'll head for Salt Lake City.

Geni: Drive over the mountian pass (Sierra Nevada) really wasn't bad. Ironically we passed the Donner Memorial where people in the 1840's who were crossing the pass were stranded in the winter and most of the party died. Now we can just drive by. Dropped camper off and went to Virginia City which can be reached from Reno by driving windy steep mountain roads. Again, a little nervous as we drove up and around switchback turns. Virginia City was important in 1870's where they found silver for the first time. The town is now a lovely tourist trap as it looks like an old western town, but it is filled with shops to browse. I didn't buy! But I loved the feel of the place.

Really squeezed in spots, but right in Reno, so not bad for an overnighter

The road winds up to where you can see the dirt line and a couple of trees close to the road. We drove all the way up there and around to the other side

This is the view from way up there

Just such interesting information about the people and how they lived

There was a fire in 1875, but this saloon was rebuilt soon after that burned most of the town

Virginia & Truckee Railroad played important part in mining venture

Got some background information from guide

The green train was in Water for Elephants and the #18 train was in many hollywood films

the owners of this mine got people to invest lots of money and then declared bankruptcy but some of the mines did well

The mine shaft is on the left just below the uprights. They would haul buckets of ore/water up the shat and then pour them in the sluice to separate the gold.

Having fun on the railroad

When this school was rebuilt, it was the first to have indoor plumbing

Look at those plank floors, just like the old west

Shel fits in so nicely with the antiques - he used to work in a gas station when he was a teenager - reminiscing about the old days

This is where Mark Twain got a job as a reporter and then became a writer

I don't even like the penny candy, but couldn't resist the picture of buckets of candy

Town Museum

Back in Reno - main drag area
