Shel: It seems like we never have cell service at the campgrounds and must upload the page the next day! This campground is no exception. Tomorrow we will start are trek toward Salt Lake City - I expect two travel days and we will have to go over two mountain ranges. Today we toured more of the sites around here. As you can see below, these trees are massive and tall - some up to 300'. They don't have a deep root system and it is amazing that they have kept standing for so long. They have some long windy narow dirt roads around here! Had a record today - put over 29 gallons of gas in at one fill-up :( Geni: Feels like Redwood is what the national parks used to be like before they paved the roads and added lodges and gift stores (tastefully done of course!). We drove down so many unpaved, bumpy, dusty roads in search of more sights to see. The trees didn't disappoint, but what they call coastal drives and scenic routes just didn't seem to come close to any of the other national parks. The only positive thing that happened was that they told us where the elk were and they actually were there! The day was overcast and kind of foggy and we didn't see the sun until around 3:30. I am in awe of all the people who tent either in solitude or with groups. They are really roughing it. Also, the cyclists who we have seen riding up the mountain roads. Today we talked to four cyclists from England who were riding from Canada to Mexico and they were staying in an RV. We are turning the camper eastwood tomorrow and heading toward home. . .with a few stops along the way. |

Woke up to overcast day, so not much to see |
On coastal trail - Yurok ceremonial site |
On Circle Trail - path wandered through the trees |
|
Just want to remember how the woods looked |
Even the fallen trees look amazing |
This is the "Big Tree" - 304 feet tall, 21.5 feet wide |
Nature's art - the tree not me. When a tree falls the log nourishes the seeds that land on it and it becomes the nurse log until the new tree grows roots to the ground |
Finally found our Elk at Prairie Creek area near beach |
This buck had been chasing cars although we didn't see that, only him resting on the side of the road |
Saw some of the herd through the forest |
For those that have snowmobiled with John Livingston, he was here with us on this trip as we had to ford a stream to get to see the elk |
Gold Bluffs beach area - nice horizon but not so pretty beach |
Bald Hills Road - nice view of canyon but not worth the trip |
Past fire incinerated inside of tree |
Area dedicated to Lady Bird Johnson |
Just want to remember looking so high up you almost fall over |
Reading about Lady Bird's park |
One of remaining trees to pass through - they don't do this anymore. Shel didn't go through because his mirrors would have been ruined |
