Sheldon and Geni's 2013 Camping Trip
Today is: September 5
We woke up in: Hardin, MT We're going to sleep in: Wall, SD

Geni: We went back to Little Bighorn Battlefield because we didn't have a chance to take the guided tour yesterday. It was really very sobering. There were various spots where you could dial into your cell phone and listen to what was happening at that place. We listened to the different strategies of the calvary and how they were outnumbered and pretty much slaughtered. The Indian tribes had joined together to fight because they were repeatedly pushed back from their lands into territory that suited the government. At this point, the indian territory, which was theirs by our govt's treaty, was taken over by gold fever and people were pouring into the area. The calvary has to move the indians because they couldn't control the influx of golddiggers. The indians were ready to fight to their death since they had nothing left. General Custer and his army never had a chance as they were greatly outnumbered. The indian historical reports said that the soldiers fought bravely to their end. Fighting is just not a good choice.

To see the battlefield and see and hear the depiction of what happened was unpleasant. Gravestones were placed where indians or soldiers fell. To see the miles and miles of territory and imagine what they saw in the distance and then had to deal with was difficult. Also, there happens to be a national cemetary at this location and all soldiers from all wars are buried there.

We are starting our journey home, left southern Montana, northeastern Wyoming, and now are back on South Dakota.

Shel: Things are kinda flat and straight out here and the 75MPH speed limit ... The truck and trailer handle very well at 70 :) Of course it dies on the hills, but what can you do. Still hot, in the 90's every day. Takes a while for the trailer to cool down - A/C has been working hard.

Red headstones are Indian warriors

Custer's men looked down from this spot and saw
what was coming

Another statue honoring troops

Headstones of the Calvary's Indian guides

View of National Cemetary from the hillside tour

Indian Spiritual Spot honoring Indians - being worked on, so
