Sheldon and Geni's 2013 Camping Trip
Today is: August 27
We woke up in: St. Ignace, MI We're going to sleep in: St. Ignace, MI

Shel: We spent most of today on Mackinac Island. The only motorized vehicles are the police, fire, and ambulance. Everything else is horse drawn, bicycle, or foot!

Geni: the island was comparable to taking a ferry to Martha's Vineyard except that it was a step back in time. There are no vehicles allowed and everything is transported by horse and wagon - supplies and people. Bicycles are also a big industry there. The town itself was quaint with beautiful houses and landscape. They said there was one fudge shop originally but now there are so many. We tried some samples and bought the most fresh delicious fudge. We went on a great carriage tour of the island.

It was fun to imagine we were back in the day BUT what you learn very quickly is that the towns in the old days had to stink because the horses are letting loose wherever and whenever! There are people who try to clean it up, but the fresh smell will hit you from time to time. We were assured that the horses are treated better than the people on the island and that the horses live twice as long as the average horse. The weather was supposed to be bad, but it turned out to be just overcast with some sun peaking through. The island is known for the 90's movie "A Moment in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. We'll have to rent it sometime.
